A remarkable woman whose journey starts from the vibrant culture of Jamaica

Joy Sherria’s life story is one of courage, resilience, and boundless love. Born into a large family in Jamaica, Joy faced significant changes early in life. At the age of 11, she was sent to the UK to join her mother, who was part of the pioneering Windrush generation. In pursuit of a better life, Joy’s mother had made the brave decision to move to the UK in the 1960s, leaving her children behind until she could bring them over.

Joy and one of her sisters joined a bustling household of eight siblings. Due to the constraints of space, Joy went to live with her aunt, who raised her during her formative years in the UK. This experience, though challenging, instilled in Joy a sense of independence and strength that would define her life.

At 18, Joy began pursuing her dream of becoming a model. Her journey was promising, with interviews at top modeling agencies, signaling a bright future ahead. However, life had other plans. At 19, Joy became pregnant, a development that would change the course of her life. Despite the societal pressures and personal challenges of the time, Joy chose to embrace motherhood, a testament to her unwavering love and commitment.

Being a single mother in the 1980s was fraught with difficulties. Joy continued to work in the fashion industry, delivering customized clothing to high-profile clients in London, balancing work life with the responsibilities of motherhood. This period was not without its struggles, as her first son faced challenges growing up in an environment where many single mothers were placed in free housing, leading him into a life of crime.

Eight years later, Joy welcomed her second son, determined to provide a different path for him. She gave her children the best she could, always striving to ensure they had opportunities she didn’t. This commitment was evident when she made the bold decision to send her younger son to live with her sister in America at the age of 16, a move that proved transformative.

During her time in America, Joy transitioned her career to nursing, caring for the elderly with the same compassion and dedication she showed her family. Her work in various care homes in the UK was a reflection of her nurturing spirit and her desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Joy Sherria’s life was a journey of overcoming obstacles, embracing change, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy is one of strength, resilience, and the enduring power of a mother’s love.
